Message from the President

KMEK members and friends,

Hope December is off to a great start for each of you!   I really enjoyed caroling at Botanica with many of you on the 2nd.  What fun it is just to sing together!  I am getting incredibly excited for all that is coming in our near future.  I think KMEK is moving in a great direction and can’t wait to share with you everything that is going on for our conference in the fall!

I hope that all of you have a wonderful Christmas and New Years and I can’t wait to see you on the 12th at the Copper Oven!

                                                                                                            Lisa

KMEK Committee Updates:

·        Social Committee (Cindy Anderson, Doreen, Rose, Cindy Swindler)

o       Christmas Caroling at Botanica was wonderfully fun!  Thanks for organizing it Cindy A!  We had a fun rehearsal and caroling time with members of KMEK and some great family participation too!   Thanks to the Melton children and the Olson children for adding their voices to our mix!

·        Fundraising Committee (Sharon, Judy)

o       Think of some things you can to create to be sold at our KMEK booth at KMEA ISW!  These items will need to be turned in to Lisa or Rachel ahead of time so that they can be priced and displayed nicely at our booth!  Receipts for materials used should be turned in to Mary.

·        Clinician Committee (Rachel, Holly, Mary, Kirk)

o       Working with Kirk and Senseney to present February 2nd John Feierabend workshop. (see below)

·        Membership PR Committee (Kirk, Amber)

o       Amber has been plugging away at updating and completing our database of the music teachers in our state!  We APPRECIATE all of your work, Amber!!!

o       Encourage KMEK members to become more visible in the music ed community by taking on roles in MENC, and presenting workshops to various areas of the state.

February 2nd  Workshop with John Feierabend

FIRST STEPS IN MUSIC: BECOMING TUNEFUL, BEATFUL AND ARTFUL
This workshop will provide a bridge from research to practice by demonstrating how a "natural" curriculum, rich in the repertoire of traditional children's songs, rhymes, games and dances can develop young children's musical intelligence, singing and movement skills and expressive sensitivities.  A model of parents and children playing together in the years from birth to age three will be presented as well as a curriculum for 3 to 8 year old children in classroom settings.

Workshop to be held at First Evangelical Free Church (1825 N. Woodlawn Wichita, KS 67208)

Sponsored by Senseney Music and GIA Publications

February 28 – March 1st, KMEA In-service Workshop at Century II

This year KMEK will be having a booth at the exhibits, Rachel and Lisa will plan on manning the booth most of the time – but please feel free to stop by for a visit and to check out all of the items for classroom use that will be available.

March 27 – 29th OAKE National Conference in Denver, CO

Several of us are planning on going to the National Conference in Denver.  Using the 10% discount provided by Frontier Airlines for the conference, the flights would cost approximately $299.99 per person for a round trip ticket.  Many of us would rather fly than drive, but there are also a few who would like to drive.  Please let us know what your plans are so we can help by finding travelmates,

roommates etc.

May 3rd, Our 2nd Favorite Singing Games and Folk Dances Sharing Time and Spring Meeting

Many of you have commented how fun it was to get together and play singing games and dance at Gloria Dei last fall.  So, we would like to have another sharing time.  Please think of some wonderful games and dances that you would like to share and then you may sign up for those by sending the name of the game/dance and the directions to Lisa (to avoid  having 2 people sharing the same dance and also to get the handout started).

Tricks for the Classroom Treats for the Soul

MKMEA Conference at the Wichita Marriott

October 31 - November 2, 2008

·        Honor Choir Committee has hired conductor, Sarah Hassler, and her accompanist, and is working to secure rehearsal/performance space, and program the music with Ms. Hassler.

·        Clinician Committee has begun the invitation process for a keynote speaker, clinicians to WOW you and have handed out session proposal forms at the MKMEA 2007 Conference and will also be asking for session proposals in the upcoming MKMEA Bulletin.   The session proposal forms have been sent to MKMEA and OAKE to include them on the download sections of their websites. We are planning to offer 3 tracks at the conference: “Tricks & Treats for Teachers: Using Kodály in the Music Classroom;” “Howdy Pardners!: Orff & Kodály;” and  Git along Li’l Doggies: Kodály-inspired Early Childhood Music;” to attract more area teachers and possibly work with the Kansas Orff Chapter.

·        Already, we have heard from some wonderful clinicians who have agreed to present including:  Jo Kirk, Leigh Ann Mock-Garner, and John Paul Johnson

·        We are EXTREMELY excited because Ars Nova, the Hungarian Choir from the Chicago conference, has agreed to come to Wichita to be our featured performers.  Everything is well on its way to creating a wonderful conference to offer to our friends and musicians from our area and the 13 states in our MKMEA region!!

  • The Exhibitors and Advertising Committee has written letters, contracts…etc. to potential exhibitors and advertisers.  We will be sending these out in early January and will work to provide a large array of exhibits for conference attendees.
  • I have had several of you volunteer to help in many different capacities.  If you haven’t let me know where you’d feel most comfortable helping, please do!
